OHMYGOSH DEADPOOL! This... this was so utterly yes.

Ever since I was introduced to The Order of the Stick way back when I have been in love with self-aware stories (or metafiction). Not when it interrupts the story as parody, but when it's part of the story. SO refreshing.

I'm finding it difficult to finish this book. It's changed a lot from the beginning, and doesn't exactly encourage deep immersion.

I'm only on page 141, I said. To my sister, who was also reading and thus probably didn't hear. I continued anyway: I'm a little over halfway and so much has happened, I feel like I've read several books.

This is more linear than I thought it might be, which, in my thinking, was almost not at all.

It's essentially a collection of short stories set within a frame story; one that is rather larger than usual.

But the hero of them all is you, the reader.

A little knowledge of Ian Rankin's other works, the ITV adaptations, Arthur Conan Doyle's works, other Scottish literature, Edinburgh, and crime in general makes it even better.
