Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

9.4.19

Dave I'm being followed.

How are you being followed? You're not moving.

It's by a voice. I'm being followed by a women's voice.

What is she saying?

She's narrating.

Harold, you're staring at boxes, what is she narrating?

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

24.11.18

Or, reasons Pirates 3 is my favourite Pirates of the Caribbean film.

  • Barbossa is back
  • Elizabeth Swan kicks butt
  • Will Turner is still a dork, but also kicks butt
  • That theme song/tune
  • Pirates + western + electric guitar
  • Cutler Beckett
  • All the weirdness
  • Really, they're all just having lots of fun.

Now You See Me & Now You See Me 2

19.1.18

Absolutely loved these! I'm sure they were by no means perfect, but I truly love actively distrusting everything I'm seeing on screen.

Also magic.

Star Trek: Beyond (2016)

1.8.16

Really enjoyed Stargate-LOTR with the space orcs, and the space elf who fought the Wraith and 10,000 Wraith Darts with SG-1 and the Atlantis team and Doctor Carson Beckett in New New York and then destroyed The One Infinity Gauntlet Ring (sort of).*

*Please read, as intended, with humour/humor.

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

3.5.16

It. Was. AWESOME!

I could say so much. If you want more, this review from Geek & Sundry covers it gloriously.

Ant-Man (2015)

14.4.16

This is so odd. Good, but odd.

It's actually exactly like a cross between a Disney movie and a superhero movie.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

29.3.16

I was disappointed to read, the other day, that Sally Field didn't like her character in this. I love these films. And yes, she is a supporting character. All films, especially character films like Spidey or Deadpool, require them. But she is an intelligent supporting character, and those are important.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

26.3.16

So. I'd been a bit skeptical about the robot/AI-saving-the-world-by-destroying-people* plot last summer but Ultron is not like any other robot I've seen. (If there are more Ultron-like robots, please share.) Even better second time!

*There are approximately 1000 movies and more books with this theme. Yet we are still trying to create it.

Deadpool (2016)

5.3.16

OHMYGOSH DEADPOOL! This... this was so utterly yes.

Ever since I was introduced to The Order of the Stick way back when I have been in love with self-aware stories (or metafiction). Not when it interrupts the story as parody, but when it's part of the story. SO refreshing.

Hector and the Search for Happiness (2014)

11.9.15

"Why are you different? Why are you both different!"

This is not too luxurious a search for happiness, although having the time and the money for such things would be lovely. This, at least, is messy. Like life.

Also try: What We Did on Our Holiday (2014).

Begin Again (2013)

4.6.15

I loved this. I inexplicably loved this. Creative people creating art (music, writing, actual art) for the love of it. It's how it should be done and how the best stuff is done and it's what I want to do. I loved the writing of it too.

Make good art.

Big Hero 6 (2014)

8.3.15

I put this on for fun, not expecting to be an emotional wreck at the end. Loved San Fransokyo and all the artwork. Brilliant baddie. So, just, bad.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

15.12.13

If you can't have a dwarf standing on a dragon's nose in a film about dwarves and dragons, when can you?

That dragon was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

Last Ride (2009)

2.12.13

When I read the description for this, "A young boy travels across Australia with his father," I was expecting something along the lines of Crocodile Dundee.

That description didn't continue, as IMDb does, with "who's wanted by the law for committing a violent crime."

This was an entirely different story.

The Searchers (1956)

26.4.11

I didn't know this film was based on a novel (Alan Le May's), and I'm not so sure I would read it – it's not a particularly happy tale. In fact, upon reflection, few westerns are...

My romanticised ideas are going to slink away now.

It's still breathtakingly beautiful out there.

The Three Musketeers (2011)

3.4.11

I will be watching this. Though, not in 3D.

Screenplay is by Andrew Davies, who's written heaps and heaps of fabulous adaptations. And I rather like the look of Luke Evans / Aramis.

Star Trek (2009)

23.3.11

“Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence.”

Okay, so it's super negative, but in a true, intriguing sort of way. And space is dangerous, as this film goes on to prove. And ignore.

WALL·E (2008)

16.3.11

I never thought robots could be so empathetic, even after everyone I spoke to said nice things about them. The spork thing was funny. Where do they go: with the forks or with the spoons?

I'm finding the humans were freakishly funny-but-not-funny.
